Huahine is the first of the "Iles sous le vent" - Leewards- in the archipelago called "Société" with a surface area of 78 Km2, and possesses about 5700 inhabitants, spead among 8 villages : Fare, Maeva, Fitii, Faie in the north island (Huahine Nui or Grand Huahine) and Maroe, Haapu, Tefarerii, Parea in the south island (Huahine Iti or Little huahine)
Huahine is located 180 km from Tahiti, and 50 km from Raiatea, it is served by regular flights of the company Air Tahiti (several daily flights of about 35 minutes).
To be noted also are several visits per week by inter-island vessels carrying both cargo and passengers : Taporo; Vaeanu; Hawaiki-nui (8/9 hours duration).
A post office, two banks with cash machines, two petrol stations, a dispensary, several privates physicians, a chemist pharmacy, a dentist, a chiropractor, two internet cafes, severals hotels and restaurants as well as "roulottes" -mobile snack wagons- on the wharf, a very well provisioned supermarket, and numerous shops as well as small market for fruits, vegetables and fresh fish.
Activities available on the island : Hire/rental cars, scooters, bicycles, jet skis, diving, hobbycats, surf, deep-sea fishing, horseback riding, trecking, 4 wheels drive excusions, organised picnics, pearl farm visit, visit of a vanilla plantation, botanic garden and sacred eels. (actvities either free or with admission charge -ask on the site)
At Huahine, we can see one of the best preserved among the group of archeological sites in all of Polynesia (Mara'e)
Regular stops by cruise liners and other cruise ships, which moor in Fare or in the Maroe Bay in front of the villas of Huahine Vacance
